Growing up, Abbi Meckley could not remember a time when she wasn’t drawing all over something or reading. She was homeschooled by a mom who treasured books and fostered her creativity – often at great expense. The world was her canvas: walls, takeout boxes, the inside covers of pew Bibles, or any other scrap of paper she got her hands on.
Over time, Abbi grew to adore art and photography and developed her skills through drawing and taking pictures for friends and family. Along the way, Abbi fell in love with artists like Hilary Knight, of Eloise fame, Judith Gwyn Brown, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, and countless other children’s illustrators who fostered her love for spunky characters and elegant lines.
Fast-forward three years to when her then sweetheart (now husband) gave her a toolbox full of Copic art markers for their first Christmas together, and Abbi’s journey towards turning her dream into a full-fledged reality began. She is grateful to have an amazing family and support system around her and thankful to God for the opportunity to use and share her passion with others.
Abbi works mainly with my Copic markers, Digital Wacom tablet and watercolors for her illustrations. She finds that two things are true for her when it comes to drawing: she has to be “in the mood” and the people she spends time with tend to end up on her canvas. So if you see Abbi listening to the soundtrack for Irving Berlin’s White Christmas during Halloween, and you happen to sit down with her to have some hot chocolate, you will probably end up in her next Christmas sketch.
