Jason Moore: May 2014 Grand Strand Artist of the Month

Jason Moore has always been drawn to the ocean and has had a love for art ever since childhood. Jason grew up in Hartsville, South Carolina and began visiting Garden City Beach before the age of one. Eventually moving to the Myrtle Beach area, Moore attended, and later graduated from, Coastal Carolina University with a bachelor’s degree in art studio. Jason’s time at CCU exposed him to a variety of different mediums where he learned the basic techniques of oil and watercolor. That’s when he specifically developed a passion for painting.

Many of his lifestyle experiences can be seen in his paintings. The majority of Jason’s current work is a compilation of various local boats, marinas, and coastal landmarks as well as surfing, fishing and other aquatic subjects. His daughter, Rowan, continues to play a more prominent role in subject matter as well.

“Most of my work has a similar technique. I try to demonstrate the movement and flow of water using small “squiggly” lines layered on top of one another. Instead of blending colors for depth, I like to layer color upon color with various shapes and lines. Generally, I like to put a different spin on the way a traditional ‘seascape’ or ‘landscape’ is painted using a more abstract technique with a hint of realism. People have commented on the consistency of this style in my paintings, but I typically don’t like to have a specific label on my style because it’s likely to change and evolve over time, which can be a good thing.”
