Author, performing artist, and Gullah culture preservationist, Ronald Daise is Vice President for Creative Education at Brookgreen Gardens and the former chairman of the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission. Co-star of Nick Jr. TV’s Gullah Gullah Island, Ronald is the recipient of the 1996 South Carolina Order of the Palmetto, the State’s highest honor; the 1997 State of South Carolina Folk Heritage Award; the 2007 South Carolina African American Heritage Commission’s Lifetime Achievement Award; and an inductee in the 2013 Penn Center 1862 Circle.
Ronald released a new album in 2014, Gullah Tings fa Tink Bout. Through songs and readings, he offers listeners a musical journey to understanding and appreciating Gullah Geechee culture. The album’s genre is World Music and highlighted themes include African Diaspora; the common cultural connections of food ways, language, rice heritage, crafts, music; the tragedy of enslavement; the importance of family; and the resilience of survival.
